Bihar Batteries develops one of Europe’s first sodium-ion batteries for stationary energy storage, with NX Technologies’ BMS
Bihar Batteries and NX Technologies have announced a collaboration to accelerate the deployment in Europe of sodium-ion batteries for stationary energy storage at commercial scale. NX Technologies, specialised in power electronics for electric mobility, contributes its automotive-grade Battery Management System (BMS). Bihar Batteries, founded in 2023, develops sodium-ion storage technologies. As a first tangible result, the NX BMS has already been successfully integrated into Bihar Batteries’ prototypes.
Bihar Batteries is developing batteries that use abundant and accessible raw materials in Europe, such as sodium, as opposed to the critical materials that dominate Chinese manufacturers in today’s lithium battery market. The company, which already has its first functional prototypes, aims to begin product sales by the end of 2026 and launch its first pilot production facility with the support of the Basque Government, the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council, and the PERTE for Renewable Energies.
The NX Technologies BMS incorporates advanced sensors to improve battery safety, such as pyrotechnic fuses that enable faster response to electrical incidents. It is also the first European battery management system capable of monitoring up to 18 cells in series, which reduces the cost of the battery management system by 30% compared to other commercial solutions. Furthermore, its chemistry-agnostic design makes it compatible with any cell type, including sodium-ion, making it a key component for the development of new emerging chemistries such as the one Bihar Batteries is advancing.

For NX Technologies, this collaboration is tangible proof of its chemistry-agnostic approach. “Our BMS was conceived from day one to adapt to different chemistries, and the integration into Bihar Batteries’ prototype demonstrates this clearly. Sodium-ion batteries are a key piece of Europe’s energy independence, and we are proud that this pioneering technology is being developed here, in Donostia, and will reach the market to the highest standards”, says Mikel Peral, CEO of NX Technologies.
From Bihar Batteries’ perspective, having a technology partner like NX is decisive for its development. “NX Technologies’ BMS not only provides us with the highest standards of safety and quality, but integrates perfectly with our own components in a technology as new as sodium-ion. This alliance with a leading company is an essential step towards making our batteries with European supply chains a commercial reality”, says Alberto Cendoya, CEO of Bihar Batteries.
The collaboration comes at a time of growing urgency to strengthen the resilience of Europe’s energy system. Events such as the major power outage of 28 April 2025 that affected the Iberian Peninsula have highlighted the strategic importance of stationary energy storage, catalysing institutional and investor interest in innovative and sustainable solutions such as sodium-ion batteries.
With this alliance, two San Sebastian-based companies are taking a joint step towards building a European energy value chain: from the cell to the management system, designed and manufactured on the continent.
