How the KH-7 ECOVERGY Team Conquered Dakar Mission 1000 with NX Technologies

The toughest rally on earth just validated the future of hydrogen-electric drivetrains — and our R300 inverter was at the heart of it.

A historic third title in Mission 1000

On January 17, 2026, Jordi Juvanteny, José Luis Criado, and Xavi Ribas crossed the finish line in Yanbu, Saudi Arabia, to claim their third consecutive Dakar Rally Mission 1000 title, remaining undefeated since the category was created. It is a feat that goes beyond sport: it is proof that alternative-energy vehicles can endure, compete, and win in the harshest conditions on the planet.

The KH-7 ECOVERGY Team finished the 2026 edition with four stage victories and 237 points, six more than their nearest rival, despite a regulation handicap imposed on them as defending champions that forced them to meet stricter time references than other competitors. Against these odds, they delivered.

The groundbreaking machine: a world first in motorsport

The vehicle at the center of this achievement is not just another Dakar truck. Developed by EVARM, Xavi Ribas’ engineering company,  the 2026 iteration of the MAN 6×6 became the world’s first hydrogen-electric hybrid truck to compete in the Dakar Rally. The drivetrain combines hydrogen and HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil renewable diesel) with full electric hybridization, recovering energy during braking and descents and reusing it on demand.

Over the course of the rally, the truck covered more than 6.000 kilometers. 1.168 of them timed across 13 stages through desert dunes, rocky camel grass, mountain passes and salt flats. It completed every one of them.

“This victory is not just another trophy; it’s a stepping stone toward the future of sustainable mobility.” Xavi Ribas, Director of EVARM & Co-driver, KH-7 ECOVERGY Team

As Ribas noted after the win, the experience went far beyond the podium: fuel systems, injection, tanks, pipelines, and electronics were all pushed to their limits — and they delivered. Every lesson learned feeds directly into the continuous development of EVARM’s next-generation hydrogen trucks and buses, both combustion and fuel cell.

NX R300: built for extremes

The R300 is a compact, ultra-efficient 800V motor controller capable of delivering up to 300 kW of continuous power. At just 6.7 kg, it packs unmatched power density into a form factor designed for the tightest integration requirements of commercial vehicles, e-buses, marine systems and — as now proven — extreme motorsport.

Key specifications that made the R300 the right choice for the Dakar challenge:

  • Continuous Power: up to 300 kW @ 800V DC
  • Maximum Current: 560 Arms
  • Operating Voltage Range: 48 – 800 VDC
  • Weight: 6.7 kg
  • Temperature Range: -40°C to +105°C (automotive grade)
  • Safety: ASIL-D rated hardware, ISO 26262 and ISO 21434 cybersecurity ready
  • Advanced control: VarioSwitch™ for highest efficiency; sensorless and resolver/encoder control
  • Software: MISRA-C compliant, Active Short Circuit, torque/speed control

These characteristics made it ideally suited for the Dakar’s demands: extreme temperature swings from freezing mountain nights to scorching desert days, vibration and shock loads that would break lesser electronics, and the need for absolutely reliable energy conversion stage after stage.

What this win means for the industry

The Dakar Rally is not a laboratory. There are no controlled conditions, no safety nets, no second chances. 6.000 kilometers across Saudi Arabia’s most unforgiving terrain is the ultimate real-world stress test — and the KH-7 ECOVERGY truck passed it three years in a row.

For the broader vehicle electrification industry, this is a signal that cannot be ignored. Hydrogen-electric drivetrains are no longer a future promise — they are a present reality capable of extreme-duty performance. Sectors such as heavy transport, construction, mining and off-road logistics can now point to a Dakar champion as evidence that these technologies are ready.

At NX Technologies, this victory reinforces our conviction that high-performance power electronics are the backbone of the electrification transition. The R300 was not designed for the Dakar — it was designed for the hardest jobs in the world. The Dakar simply proved the point.

Electrifying Luxury Boats for Lumen Yachts

We have the pleasure of speaking with Jaap, the founder and CEO of Lumen Yachts (before JR Yachts). Established in 2018, Lumen Yachts is at the forefront of innovation in the electric boating luxury industry.

Having started meticulously crafting first prototypes by hand, the company has come a long way since then marketizing unique recreational yachts in different sizes and voltages.

Our collaboration started with the Lumen E10, featuring two W90 inverters. Following the press release on 27th June 2024, Lumen is now planning to produce eight E10 boats in the next 12 months and an additional 32 over the following two years. Besides, they are working on a 6m boat in 48V.

What challenges did Lumen Yachts face with their powertrain system before collaborating with NX Technologies?

Before collaborating with NX Technologies, Lumen Yachts was primarily using inverters from a major supplier. When looking at suitable inverters for the E10 boat, they realized the inverter that met the required specifications were too bulky, heavy and expensive. Besides, they were very interested in identifying a less noisy solution to deliver a silent yachting experience as previous experiences with their former supplier proved too noisy.

Jaap first heard about NX at the Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo in Amsterdam, and after it caught his attention, he explored more about us online. He found that the W90 inverter offered the necessary power and voltage ratings with a much more compact and lightweight design.

How has the W90 inverter improved the performance of the Lumen E10?

The boat features two independent POD motors from Arka, which significantly enhances maneuverability and control. Motor and inverter calibration was performed in the Netherlands at Arka’s test benches. Thanks to DeveLinkSTUDIO and some remote support from NX, Lumen completed the calibration within a week to then continue with system integration at vehicle level.

As highlighted by Jaap, the introduction of NX’s W90 inverter has brought remarkable improvements:

  • Space and weight reduction
  • In-depth calibration allowed the motor to deliver a 30% increase in power compared to the motor ratings provided by their supplier.
  • It has allowed Lumen to deliver on their silent yachting promise, providing a more luxurious and peaceful experience to the customer thanks to VarioSwitch switching strategy.
  • The inverters operate each POD motor autonomously in speed control to improve drivability and ensure a smooth sailing sensation in any environmental conditions.
  •  NX all-in-one DeveLinkSTUDIO tool greatly facilitated the setup process and enhanced the understanding of actual performance.
  • Compared to the outdated Human Machine Interfaces (HMI) of other inverter suppliers, NX DeveLinkSTUDIO allows real-time performance analysis which allowed Lumen to react to what is happening on the fly, thereby reducing costs and minimizing errors.

What are the benefits of working with NX?

Jaap emphasized the benefits of working directly with NX’s technical support team. Unlike with dealers, the direct collaboration with the manufacturer ensures each request was fulfilled much quicker and effectively, hereby improving the technical acumen of Lumen.

Jaap particularly appreciates NX’s openness to adopting new technology and their swift resolution of potential issues. This aspect holds particular importance for customers in the luxury market, where quick and refined solutions to any problems are highly valued.

In addition to the in-depth technical expertise and competence, Jaap has also highlighted the human quality of NX team. He describes the communication and collaboration with each NX colleague as first-class. He is confident in the reliability of our products and robustness of NX as a company. We appreciate Jaap’s eagerness for NX to continue expanding the POWER inverter range to cover all future applications.

What’s next?

We are proud to witness how our inverters are helping Lumen to advance in the luxury electric boating industry with more compact, efficient, silent and accessible technology. The W90 inverter, combined with the innovative DeveLinkSTUDIO, has not only improved performance but also set a new standard in user experience and technical support for the client.

What are we trying to achieve with this collaboration?

Our main goal is to help our customers accelerate the roadmap for their transition to developing and integrating electric vehicles.

The role of electronic systems in the automotive industry is continuously expanding. As the number of electronic functions increases. This electronic functions results in the associated software becoming more complex and expansive.

As a mission-critical industry, the automotive development process must adhere to regulatory standards such as ISO 26262. Following standard development procedures can have a positive outcome on the success of automotive functions and software. V-Model is one of the widely used software development processes in the automotive industry.

To put it simply, V-Model (where V stands for verification and validation) splits the development process into two parts – the left arm of the V consists of requirement analysis, function design, and software development while the right arm concentrates on the verification and validation activities followed by the release. The V-model is an extension of the waterfall methodology. V-Model emphasizes testing, particularly the need for early test planning.

What tools can be used to accelerate this process?

Hardware in the Loop (HiL) systems are crucial for automotive electronics development for several reasons. They allow for the testing and validation of complex electronic control units (ECUs) and systems in a virtual environment before physical prototypes are available. This can significantly reduce development time and costs, as well as improve the quality and reliability of the final product.

HiL systems enable engineers to simulate real-world conditions and test how ECUs will respond to various inputs and scenarios. This is particularly important in the automotive industry, where safety and reliability are paramount. By using HiL systems, developers can ensure that automotive electronics are thoroughly tested and validated, which helps to prevent issues once the vehicles are on the road.

Moreover, HiL systems support the development of advanced features such as autonomous driving and electrification. They provide a platform to test and refine algorithms, sensor fusion strategies, and control systems that are essential for these technologies.
